  • The churches built by the immigrants in the new world were the center of their lives. Within these churches lie invaluable ledgers which document their joys and sorrows - the joy of marriage and baptism and the sorrow of death and burial. The witnesses chosen for immigrants' marriages, the godparents selected for infant baptisms, often reflect old village ties carried over to the new world.

Our ability to access these records varies greatly. At least one church, Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, has had its records microfilmed although a significant portion is written in Old Church Slavonic. Some parish priests are most generous in helping families find records of their parents and grand-parents; others lack interest and/or are not willing to take the time for the research.

We include samples of the type of knowledge that can be obtained through these records and look forward to adding those of other families who have been able to find similar information. We are particularly interested in adding descriptions of the churches which supported our immigrant ancestors.
